A night in the Wadi Rum desert and thousands of stars watching me

EN: “When you live in a city you eventually get to know it pretty well. This works the same for me with the desert.” If you ever wondered how beduins manage to find their bearings in the wilderness, this is the answer we received from Fatez, our guide in the desert region of Jordan, namely Wadi Rum (The Moon’s Valley). The thing which for the majority of us represents an attraction and a spring of fascination, for the ones living in the clasp of the sand is actually home. A not-so-steady home, because the direction of the winds and the need to guard against them goads beduins into moving their tents often. A tirelessly moving house which they would never leave in behalf of the comfort offered by a city.

Despre beduinii din Wadi Rum – The beduins from Wadi Rum

EN: Before telling you my experience in the desert, I chose to focus on the people who are living here, because they were the ones who truly fascinated me, even more than the beauty and the energy the place lavishly breathes out. The fact that I got to catch a tiny insight into their life and to understand their lifestyle, partly joining it, was maybe much stronger an experience than admiring the starry sky in the middle of the desert. Fatez drove us on a trail crossed by cars and caravans. The cars are the conveyances for tourists to reach the main attractions of the desert, precisely rocks with different meanings and shapes – Wadi Rum is the only desert on Earth with cliffs, and this feature is due to the fact that, long time ago, this entire area was under the sea. The traces of the caravans are the ones left by the ancestors, taken over through many generations and brought to the present days. These habits, even in this raving technologized era, help the beduins live much the same as their ancestors, without plenty of modern convenience.

EN: It’s hard to ignore these differences between the frenzy life common to the cities we live in and the absolute serenity of the desert, where the echo logs a long way until reaching back to you. And, even more, people’s allegiance for these places is incredible; living in a world of movement, where we are able to travel whenever and wherever we want, they choose to live in tents, together with their big families. The family members are many because men are able to have up to four wives if, of course, they can afford it.

EN: We are tempted to say that the touristic development had an impact on them and this is actually right, but only to a certain extent. For example, because of their living in the desert, many of the beduins didn’t attend scholastic education, yet they learned English very well from the tourists who visit them daily. They adapted, somehow, to the needs of these times, and by saying this I mean their use of mobile phone and electricity. But, mostly and above all, they are nomads who love freedom, and it’s obvious at the very first eyesight. You can tell this by their specific clothing and – if you choose to spend a night in the desert – by the way tents are decorated, by the way the food is cooked in deep holes in the sand, by their approach and mindset. The inhabitants of this areas somehow absorbed from the outside the little bit they needed for a peaceful living, but they still live by their own rules, sometimes different from The Hashemite Kingdom. Only by looking at them you remember how it feels not to depend on anyone or anything and to be so glad with this thing – I could experience these feelings for one night.

EN: Fatez, the one I’ve been telling you about, is one of Suleiman’s (my host at Wadi Rum Starlight Camp) nephews. Suleiman seemed to me to represent the gate between ancient habits and this present which is owned by technology. He encourages education but holds on to the local identity. He protects his family – many of his relatives are collaborating to the development of the campus – but he shows it, at the same time, the concept of responsibility. He is connected to social networks, but he is a promoter of conversations around the fire cheered with hot sage tea.

Primul contact cu deșertul Wadi Rum – First grip on the Wadi Rum desert

EN: I’m leaving from Aqaba in a sunny December day in a hurry, eager to reach my next destination, the Wadi Rum desert. The day is shorter in the winter, even though you cannot really tell by the temperatures that it’s the cold season, so I have to be on time for the desert trip and of course, for the most awaited moment, the sunset. I will start my story with this adventure because I am an avowed enthusiast of the show the sun offers when it starts to descend, therefore this experience has no choice but to be amazing, as expected. I learned that cloudy days provide spectacular sunsets, and the sunny ones give you a front line golden ticket to the clear sky star ballet; I attended quite a cloudy sunset, but the clouds scattered and left behind a blanket of stars, more intense than ever and I considered myself a lucky being.

EN: On top of a dune, in a place carefully chosen by Fatez, I found myself gazing out as the light was becoming more and more pale. I basked in the delight of watching the sky being gradually painted in orange, pink and eventually red while gentle blasts of wind were caressing me and I figured out what freedom is – only by looking at Fatez I could easily understand this concept, because he is a symbol of lucid decisions, lived to the full, joyfully and intensely.

EN: But the story started only a few hours before, when we left the car, for one night, in Wadi Rum Village, at the „entrance„ in the desert. The landscape had already whispered to us hints of the place we were going to discover, the road signs on the road to the village had warned us that we might find camels on our way and it’s no surprise that they didn’t wait too long until greeting us. But this experience turned into a veritable adventure the moment when Fatez’s off-road car hit the sand (?) and I started to feel how the wind was wildly dressing my hair. From time to time we made stopovers for climbing or photographing different cliffs which are genuine attractions, either for their shapes – one of them is named „the hen„ because of its shape – or for their beauty – another one was formed as a bridge and this is a perfect place for pictures, but given the fact that it’s quite a high cliff, if you’re not adequatly dressed, it can be difficult to climb. Wadi Rum can also please the cinephiles, because this is the place where the famous movie „Lawrence of Arabia„ was shot.

EN: And these are just a few examples, because there are many more cliffs which I couldn’t help admiring, although their shapes didn’t suggest anything in particular. Nevertheless, the view they form along with the brick-red sand undoubtedly seems from another world – no wonder why Wadi Rum desert is associated with Mars. But don’t you think that these are the only colours we see in this place, because there is also an area with white sand which never mixes with the red one.

EN: Before arriving here I had a vague feeling of what I was going to discover, and by this I mean the fact that I had done my usual research before. But clearly no picture and no story can reproduce the emotions which overfill your reservoir – take into account that there is a high possibility for my subjectivity level to exceed the limits because the desert is one of the places which I get the feeling of belonging to. The air you inhale deeply as if trying to steal a tiny part of the desert and introduce it into your cells, your footprints in the sand, the dunes you climb and the wilderness broadly represent the general experience in the desert. What follows next happens if you choose to spend the night hosted by the beduins, and this is what I’m going to tell you about.

Cum a fost noaptea petrecută în cort? – How was my night in a tent?

EN: As I see it, this kind of experiences are to be discovered at least once in a lifetime and, for most us, it might be the love it or hate it affair. You are assailed by various feelings, especially after the sunset, when the light sources are dim – keeping in mind the place where we are and that the resources are limited, the tents function with the help of an electric generator. Therewith, the show of the sky is more intense as you get the feeling you can at any point gather the stars with your hand, as they seem to be so close.

EN: We all know that nights in the desert are very cold. The temperature variation in comparison with daytime is considerable, so I advise you to have some warm clothes with you. You’ll want to stay outside and watch the constellations. You’ll want to get warm under a blanket with a cup of the sage tea beduins prepare in their own way. You’ll want to bask in the sensations as intensely and for as long as possible. You’ll wonder if you like it or not and you’ll figure out the uniqueness of this experience. You’ll wake up to watch the sunrise, you’ll feel the cold even more than in the night time, but you’ll love how the sunrays to show up from behind the dunes or the cliffs. You will enthusiastically wait for the sunrise, even though, at the same time, you’ll know that it means your experience is about to end.

EN: The beduins at Wadi Rum Starlight Camp were our hosts and we rejoiced together in the usual practice of cooking the food under the sand and taking it out still steaming, we enjoyed the traditional dishes along with fire heated pita bread, we had tea, we shared our experiences, we laughed together, we happily met other tourists who joined us and with whom we shared our feelings about Jordan – we unanimously decided that it’s a country everyone should visit as soon as possible. Once I reached my tent, from my bed, the entire sky seemed to belong to me, because one of the walls of the tent was transparent and this thing allowed me to look for a long while for the constellations, although I have never known how to identify them and to tell one from the other.

– How safe this kind of experience is?

EN: I received lots of questions about my experience in the desert, so I decided to answer to all of them in this article – if there should be further ones, don’t hesitate to write to me. I have noticed a slight reluctance from people while telling them how eager I was to spend a night in the desert and, even after it, many of the people I spoked with confessed that they were a bit surprised. Allow me to tell you that there is no reason to worry about, and the first aspect confirming this thing is the fact that, in Wadi Rum Village, tourists are registered and asked to declare even the camp they are going to stay in.

EN: If you’re not a huge fan of wild animals, I’m telling you that apart from some cats – not savage at all, for that matter – and camels, I didn’t come across any living creature – therefore no snakes, spiders, scorpions or anything alike. This is the beduins’ lifestyle and they are trying to contribute to great experiences for the tourists – it’s a reasonable thing, so long as they are making a living out of it. The tourism in Jordan is developing at a fast pace, there are tents which offer all the facilities – including your own bathroom, although the water is pretty cold but, again, we shouldn’t forget where we are – and it’s almost no effort to book them on all the specific websites, many of them even having their own ones.

EN: The way I saw it, the main fears concern wild creatures and the eventuality of being kidnapped, which I never had. In fact, there is no reason to feel unsafe in any place in the whole country, despite of having conflictual neighbours. I organized the whole trip on my own, without the services of any agency even if they offer attractive programs for really good prices and I crossed nearly the entire country.

EN: My experience in the desert is one of the most intense I’ve had so far, because the desert is a place where you abandon yourself to a world you barely know but which promises to offer you its lessons of freedom – you need to assign a good couple of hours in the daytime to the desert tour. If you’ve ever wondered how complete freedom feels like, well, for me, in Wadi Rum it got a shape and contour and became, in this way, real.
